Description

These notches are prominent incisures encroaching the inferior surface of the pedicles. Their anterior boundary is the vertebral body, the posterior boundary is the inferior articular facet, and superiorly the pedicle bounds the notch. When articulated they form, with the subjacent superior notch, the intervertebral foramen for passage of the spinal nerve.

Etymology

The term notch refers to an indentation in the margin of a bone. The Latin equivalent for this term is incisure.
