Anterior articular facet
This is the small, smooth articular surface on the anterior portion of the dens. It forms an articular surface with the fovea on the anterior arch of the atlas.
Facet, literally means a little face. It came into English via the French diminutive facette that came from the Latin facies or face. Anatomically, the term describes smooth, flat surfaces.
