Description

The thick, rectangular body of the axis is unique in having a superior projection, the dens. The body is formed of a thin outer covering of compact bone surrounding an internal core of spongy or cancellous bone. Its flattened inferior surface receives the intervertebral disc that unites it with the subjacent vertebra.

Etymology

The term body or its Latin equivalent corpus refers to the large central portion of a structure. This portion of the vertebra is the centrum, Latin for center.
