Description

This is the discoidal, lateral projecting part of the bone. This round disc sits atop the pillar-like neck. Its lateral surface has a shallow fossa covered with cartilage. This facet forms the synovial joint with the lenticular process of the incus.

Etymology

The term head refers to a smooth, rounded articular surface. The Latin equivalent is caput.
