Description

This is the arch-like process of bone affixed to the inferior part of the body. It contains the alveoli for the roots of the upper teeth. It arches from the midline anteriorly to the base of the maxillary tuber posteriorly.

Etymology

Alveolar comes from the Latin alveolus meaning a small cavity. It is the diminutive of the Latin alvus meaning a hollow or trough.
