Anterior ethmoid foramen or notch ...
This is usually a small notch on the superior margin of the orbital plate toward the anterior end. In the articulated skull, this notch corresponds to a similar small notch in the frontal bone creating a small foramen in the sutural junction of the two bones. The foramen transmits the anterior ethmoidal nerve, a branch of the nasociliary nerve, into the anterior and middle ethmoidal sinuses and nasal cavity. Sometimes this small foramen forms entirely within the orbital plate of the ethmoid bone.
Foramen is the Latin term designating a hole-like opening. It is derived from the Latin forare meaning to bore or perforate. The term ethmoid comes from the Greek term ethmos meaning sieve. Galen called the bone the sieve-like bone because of the many small foramina that transmit the olfactory nerves to the nasal cavity.
