Perpendicular lamina

Description

The perpendicular lamina or plate descends below the transverse cribriform plate in the vertical axis. It is a thin plate of bone that separates the superior portion of the nasal cavity into right and left sides. Its inferior border articulates with the vomer posteriorly and the septal nasal cartilage anteriorly. It forms smooth quadrilateral surfaces that form the upper medial walls of each nasal cavity.

Etymology

Perpendicular comes from the Latin meaning to weigh carefully. This is from the Latin per- and pendere meaning to hang or weigh. Things were weighed by hanging from a vertical line. The term perpendiculum came to mean a plum line. The term lamina is Latin for plate, leaf, or thin scale.
