Hamulus of the sphenoid


Description

The hamulus is the laterally deflected hook of bone at the inferior end of the medial pterygoid plate. It serves a pulley-like function for the tendon of the tensor veli palatini muscle and serves as the attachment for the pterygomandibular raphe.

Etymology

From the Latin hamatus meaning hooked or crooked.
