Spine of the sphenoid
Other Terms: Backbone, Spinal column, Spine, Columna vertebralis, Épine, Colonne vertébrale, Columna vertebral
This is a small pointed projection on the postero-inferior surface of the greater wing of the sphenoid, near its junction with the temporal bone. Attached to this process are the sphenomandibular ligament and tensor veli palatini muscle.
Spine is derived from the Latin spina meaning a thorn. Anatomists use the term to designate pointed projections of bone.
