Spine of the sphenoid

Description

This is a small pointed projection on the postero-inferior surface of the greater wing of the sphenoid, near its junction with the temporal bone. Attached to this process are the sphenomandibular ligament and tensor veli palatini muscle.

Etymology

Spine is derived from the Latin spina meaning a thorn. Anatomists use the term to designate pointed projections of bone.
