Etymology
This muscle’s name in English is the muscle between the bones on the sole of the foot. Interossei comes from the Latin terms inter meaning “between” and os meaning “bone.”The word plantaris is from the Latin planta for “the sole of the foot,” which comes from the Greek plata meaning “flat.”
Origin
Plantar surface of the base and medial sides of the shaft of the metatarsal bones 3, 4, and 5.
Insertion
Medial side of the base of the proximal phalanges and extensor expansion of digits 3, 4, and 5.
Action
Adduction of digits 3, 4, and 5; extension of the interphalangeal joints.
Nerve supply
Lateral plantar nerve (S2 and S3)
Blood supply
The muscle is supplied by the lateral plantar artery, plantar arch, second to fourth plantar metacarpal arteries, and dorsal digital arteries.
