Etymology
In English, this muscle’s name is the muscle that leads the big toe toward (the other toes).Adductor is a term that describes the function or action of the muscle. It literally means to draw or to lead toward and is derived from the Latin ad meaning “toward” andducere meaning “to lead or to draw.”The term hallucis is from the Latin hallux, which originally arose from the Greek halmos meaning “to leap or spring.” The big toe was so-named because of its functional role in leaping.
Origin
Oblique head from the bases of the second, third, and fourth metatarsal bones; transverse head from the transverse metatarsophalangeal ligaments of toes 3, 4, and 5.
Insertion
Lateral sesamoid bone and the base of the proximal phalanx of the big toe.
Action
Adduction and flexion of the big toe at the metatarsophalangeal joint.
Nerve supply
Lateral plantar nerve (S2 and S3)
Blood supply
The muscle receives blood from the medial and lateral plantar arteries, the plantar arch, and the first, second, third, and fourth plantar metatarsal arteries.
