The foot muscles are those confined to the foot skeleton. Many of the crural muscles’ tendons terminate in the foot and assist the intrinsic foot muscles with movements of the digits, but the foot muscles comprise the only muscle tissue in the foot. Within the foot there are two muscle compartments – a thin dorsal compartment of two muscles and a more substantial plantar compartment of many muscles that are situated in four distinct layers. All of the intrinsic foot muscles assist with movements of the toes.
