Etymology
The English name of this muscle is the lower little twin muscle. The word gemellus is Latin for “little twin.” It comes from the Latin geminus meaning “twin” and the diminutive ending –llus or “little.”The Latin word inferior comes out of inferus meaning “low or lower.”
Origin
Upper portion of the tuberosity of the ischium.
Insertion
Joins the inferior edge of the obturator internus tendon to the medial surface of the greater trochanter of the femur.
Action
Lateral rotation of the hip joint; helps abduct a flexed thigh.
Nerve supply
Nerve to quadratus femoris (L5 and S1)
Blood supply
Blood supply is from the internal iliac artery via the superior and inferior gluteal arteries and the internal pudendal artery.
