Etymology
This muscle’s name in English is the muscle between the bones on the flat of the hand. Interossei comes from the Latin terms inter meaning “between” and os meaning “bone.”The word palmaris is from the Latin palma for “the flat of the hand.”
Origin
Anterior surface of the length of the metacarpal bones 1, 2, 4, and 5 on the side toward the middle finger.
Insertion
Base of proximal phalanges and extensor expansion of digits 1, 2, 4, and 5 on the middle finger side.
Action
Adduction of digits 1, 2, 4, and 5 at the metacarpophalangeal joints; assist with flexion of the metacarpophalangeal joints; extend the interphalangeal joints.
Nerve supply
Ulnar nerve (C8 and T1)
Blood supply
The palmar interossei receive blood from the deep palmar arch, the princeps pollicis artery, the radialis indicis artery, palmar metacarpal arteries, and common and proper palmar digital arteries.
