Etymology
In English this muscle’s name is the long muscle on the radial side that straightens the wrist. The word extensor comes from the Latin ex meaning “out from” and tendere meaning “to stretch.”Carpi is the genitive form of the Latin carpus meaning “wrist.”Radialis is used in reference to the muscle’s position on the radial side of the forearm. This term comes from the Latin radius meaning “a rod or spoke,” which is the shape of the bone.The term longus is Latin for “long” and is typically used when there is a similar muscle that has the same name but is shorter.
Origin
Distal part of lateral supracondylar ridge of the humerus and lateral epicondyle via the common extensor tendon
Insertion
Posterior surface at the base of 2nd metacarpal bone
Action
Extension of the wrist; abducts (radial deviation) the wrist
Nerve supply
Radial nerve (C6 and C7)
Blood supply
From proximal to distal, the muscle receives blood from the radial collateral artery, the radial recurrent artery, the recurrent interosseous artery, and the posterior interosseous artery.
