Etymology
The English name for this muscle is the long muscle on the flat of the hand. The word palmaris is from the Latin palma for “the flat of the hand.”Longus is the Latin term meaning “long.” This is being used as a comparative reference to a shorter muscle that does the same thing.
Origin
Medial epicondyle of humerus via the common flexor tendon
Insertion
Flexor retinaculum and via palmar aponeurosis to skin and fascia of palm and digits
Action
Main function is to anchor the skin and fascia of the hand and keep it from sliding towards the digits; assists flexion of the wrist
Nerve supply
Median nerve (C7 and C8)
Blood supply
From proximal to distal, the belly of the muscle receives blood supply from the ulnar collateral arteries, the anterior and posterior ulnar recurrent arteries, and small muscular branches from the ulnar artery. The distal tendon receives its supply from small branches from the superficial palmar arch.
