Etymology
In English, this muscle’s name literally translates as the muscle under the key. The Latin prefix sub- meaning “under” is added to the Latin clavis meaning “key.” The Latin term clavis was used to describe the clavicle because of fancied resemblance of this bone to an ancient key.
Origin
Superior surface of the junction of the first rib with its costal cartilage.
Insertion
Groove on the inferior surface of the middle portion of the clavicle.
Action
By depressing the lateral end of the clavicle it assists the pectoralis minor and the rhomboideus major with downward rotation of the glenoid cavity of the scapula. It possibly also helps to brace the clavicle against the sternum.
Nerve supply
Nerve to subclavius (C5 and C6)
Blood supply
Suprascapular artery and thoraco-acromial artery via its clavicular branch.
