Other Terms: Right orbital part proper of frontal bone
This is the horizontal portion of the frontal bone forming the roofs of the orbits. It is a thin plate of bone, especially medially where it can be translucent. Its orbital surface is smooth, while its cranial surface is smooth to corrugate. The corrugations are impressions formed by the gyri of the frontal lobe of the brain.
Orbital arises from the Latin orbis meaning a circle. Medieval anatomists were the first to apply this term to the eye socket. Plate, or its Latin equivalent lamina, describes a thin sheet of bone.
