The word sphincter comes from the Greek sphinkter meaning “that which binds tight,” which in turn comes from the Greek verb sphingein meaning “to bind tight.”The word urethrae arises from the Greek ourethra meaning “to make urine.” This comes from the Greek ouron meaning “urine.” This is an ancient term that is traceable back to the time of Hippocrates.The Latin word vagina means “sheath,” referring to the sheath like relationship formed with the penis during intercourse.

Joins opposite muscle to form a sling like aponeurosis on anterior side of urethra.

Elongate and compress urethra and vagina.
