Etymology
In English, this muscle’s name is the crosswise muscle of the area around that which excretes. The Latin term transversus means “crosswise” and comes from Latin trans meaning “across, beyond, or through” and the Latin verb vertere meaning “to turn.” Perinei comes from the Greek peri meaning “around” and the verb inan, which means “to excrete.” This reference to excretion is applied to the anus and urethral opening. The term profundus is Latin for “deep.” It arises from the Latin pro meaning “before” and fundus meaning “the bottom.” So something just before the bottom is deep.
