The English name for this muscle is the porous swelling muscle. The word bulbospongiosus arises from the Greek terms Greek bulbos meaning “swelling” and theGreek spongos meaning “porous.” Spongos is an ancient term that can be traced back to the Odyssey of Homer where porous, absorbent sponges were used to soak up the blood that resulted from Ulysses’ killing of the suitors of his wife.
