Etymology
The English name of this muscle is the muscle of the hip and tissue full of hollow spaces. The word ischium has an interesting history. Hippocrates first used the Greek term ischion to designate both the “hip joint and the hip region.” It was later Latinized as ischium and used to describe “the lower bone of the os coxae.” The term cavernosus comes from the Latin cavus meaning “hollow.” It is used here with reference to hollow spaces in the erectile tissue of the penis and clitoris, to which this muscle attaches.
Origin
Medial side of ischial tuberosity and ischial ramus.
Insertion
Fibers converge onto a tendinous aponeurosis that surround crus of penis or clitoris.
Action
Compress the crus penis and clitoris to assist in maintenance of erection
Nerve supply
Perineal branches of the pudendal nerve (S2, S3, and S4)
Blood supply
Internal pudendal artery and its perineal branch from the internal iliac artery.
