Etymology
In English, this muscle’s name is the crosswise muscle toward the surface of the area around that which excretes. The Latin term transversus means “crosswise” and comes from Latin trans meaning “across, beyond, or through” and the Latin verb vertere meaning “to turn.” Perinei comes from the Greek peri meaning “around” and the verb inan, which means “to excrete.” This reference to excretion is applied to the anus and urethral opening.The term superficialis is Latin for “near the surface.” It arises from the Latin superficies meaning “surface”.

Medial side of ischial tuberosity.
