Etymology
In English, this muscle’s name is the muscles of the breast, or chest. The word sternalis comes from the Latin word sternon meaning “breast or chest.”
Origin
Anterior surface of the inferior costal cartilages of the true ribs and the superior part of the rectus sheath.
Insertion
Anterior surface of the superior aspect of the sternum and the adjoining costal cartilages.
Action
Assists with rib movements.
Nerve supply
Intercostal nerves (T2 through T7)
Blood supply
Perforating branches from the internal thoracic artery and anterior intercostal arteries.
