Etymology
The English name for this muscle is the muscle between the thorns or spines. The word interspinales comes from the Latin words inter meaning “between” and spina meaning “thorn.” This term was applied to pointed projections and in the 14th century was applied to the vertebral column with all its palpable spinous processes that form the dorsal line of the backbone.Lumborum comes from the Latin lumbus for “loin.”
Origin
Sides of the spinous processes of lumbar vertebrae one to four near their apex
Insertion
Sides of the spinous processes of lumbar vertebrae two to five near their apex
Action
Possibly weakly assist with extension of the lumbar vertebrae. They are most likely proprioceptive transducers that monitor the position and movements of the vertebral column and provide feedback that influences the activity of the larger multisegmental muscles of the vertebral column.
Nerve supply
Dorsal rami of lumbar spinal nerves (L1 to L4)
Blood supply
Dorsal branches of the lumbar arteries from the aorta.
