Etymology
The English name for this muscle is the muscle split into many parts. The word multifidus comes from the Latin multi meaning “much, or many” and the verb findere, which means “to split into many parts.”The word lumborum is from the Latin lumbus meaning “loin.”
Origin
Intermediate tubercles of sacrum, posterior superior iliac spine, and mamillary processes of lumbar vertebrae
Insertion
Posterior surface of lamina and base of spinous process from T10 to L5
Action
Extension of the lumbar vertebral column; postural support of vertebral column; proprioceptive monitors of vertebral position.
Nerve supply
Dorsal rami of lumbar and sacral spinal nerves (L2 to S3)
Blood supply
Dorsal branches of the lumbar arteries from the aorta. Dorsal branches of the lateral sacral artery from the internal iliac artery.
