In English, this muscle’s name is the long muscle that lifts the rib. Levatores comes from the Latin verb levare meaning “to lift.”Costarum comes from the Latin costa meaning “rib.”
Origin
Transverse processes of the seventh cervical and first eleven thoracic vertebrae
Insertion
Posterior surface of each rib between the tubercle and angle
Action
Elevate the ribs and possibly weakly assist with lateral flexion of the thoracic vertebrae. They are most likely proprioceptive transducers that monitor the position and movements of the vertebral column and provide feedback that influences the activity of the larger multisegmental muscles of the vertebral column.
