Etymology
The English name for this muscle is the muscle between the groin, or flank, and the ribs in the loin region. The word iliocostalis comes from the Latin words ilium meaning “groin, or flank,” and costa meaning “rib.”Cervicis comes from the Latin cervix for “neck.”
Origin
Superior margin of the angles of ribs 3 to 6 just medial to attachment of the iliocostalis thoracis
Insertion
Posterior tubercles of transverse processes of C4 to C6
Action
Extension of the vertebral column; assist with lateral flexion of vertebral column;; postural stabilization of vertebral column.
Nerve supply
Dorsal rami of cervical and thoracic spinal nerves (C4 to T6)
Blood supply
Muscular branches of the occipital artery from the external carotid artery. Dorsal branches of the posterior intercostal arteries from the thoracic aorta.
