Etymology
The English name for this muscle is the muscle of the tongue that is perpendicular to the horizon. The word linguae comes from the Latin lingua meaning “tongue.”The word verticalis is Latin for “overhead,” which comes from the Latin vertex meaning the “highest point.” It has come to mean a plane in this orientation or perpendicular to the horizon.
