Etymology
The English name for this muscle is the lower lengthwise muscle of the tongue. The term longitudinalis is from Latin longitido meaning “length,” which in turn comes from the Latin longus meaning “long.”The Latin word inferior comes out of inferus meaning “low or lower.”
Origin
Submucosa of the root of the tongue and the body of the hyoid bone
Insertion
Submucosa of the apex of the tongue inferiorly
Action
Shortens the tongue and turns the apex under.

Hypoglossal nerve (Cranial nerve XII)
Blood supply
Lingual artery from the external carotid artery and tonsillar artery from the first part of the facial artery.
