Etymology
The English name for this muscle is the upper lengthwise muscle of the tongue. The term longitudinalis is from Latin longitido meaning “length,” which in turn comes from the Latin longus meaning “long.”The Latin term superior is derived from the Latin super meaning “above.”
Origin
Submucosal tissue anterior to the epiglottis and median septum
Insertion
Mucosa and submucosa of the lateral and anterior lingual margins superiorly
Action
Shorten tongue and turn the sides and apex up.
Nerve supply
Hypoglossal nerve (Cranial nerve XII)
Blood supply
Lingual artery from the external carotid artery and tonsillar artery from the first part of the facial artery.
