Etymology
In English this muscle’s name is the muscle of the chin and the tongue. The word genioglossus can be divided into the Greek words genion meaning “chin” and glossa meaning “tongue.”
Origin
Superior genial tubercle on the inner surface of the anterior part of the mandible
Insertion
Blends with intrinsic muscles of the tongue from apex to root, most prominently in the middle; some lateral fibers pass back to the middle pharyngeal constrictor; inferior fibers join the body of the hyoid bone
Action
Bilateral contraction helps protract the tongue and produce a concavity in its upper surface, unilateral contraction bends it to the opposite side.
