Etymology
In English this muscle’s name is the muscle of the pillar and the tongue. The word styloglossus can be divided into the Greek words stylos meaning “pillar” and glossa meaning “tongue.”
Origin
Apical end of the styloid process on its lateral side and the adjacent stylomandibular ligament
Insertion
Longitudinal part blends dorsally with the inferior longitudinal muscle; oblique part blends with the hyoglossus muscle
Action
Elevates and retracts the tongue.

Hypoglossal nerve (Cranial nerve XII)
Blood supply
Ascending pharyngeal artery from the external carotid artery and the ascending palatine and tonsillar arteries from the first part of the facial artery.
