The English name for this muscle is the muscle that lifts the upper eyelid. The word levator comes from the Latin levare meaning “to lift.”Palpebra is Latin for “eyelid.” This comes from the Latin palpo, which means “to stroke gently,” probably with reference to the way the eyelids gently stroke the surface of the eye.The Latin term superior is derived from the Latin super meaning “above.”

Inferior surface of the lesser wing of the sphenoid bone above the optic canal

Tarsal plate and skin of the superior eyelid
