The English name for this muscle is the lower slanting muscle (of the eye). The Latin term obliquus means slanting or sideways and describes its orientation.The Latin word inferior comes out of inferus meaning “low or lower.”

Maxillary floor of the orbit lateral to the nasolacrimal groove
Insertion
Inferolateral aspect of the sclera in its posterior half
