Etymology
In English this muscle’s name is the muscle of the pillar and the hyoid bone. The word stylohyoid can be divided into the Greek words stylos meaning “pillar” and the term hyoid comes from its resemblance to the Greek letter upsilon (u), which is aspirated as hy. This is combined with the suffix eidos meaning “shape or form.”

Posterior surface of the styloid process of the temporal bone
Insertion
Body of the hyoid bone near the base of the greater cornu
Action
The muscle acts to elongate the floor of the oral cavity by raising the hyoid bone and pulling it posteriorly.

Superior thyroid artery and the suprahyoid branch of the lingual artery.
