Other Terms: Infraorbital margin, Margo infraorbitalis, Bord infraorbitaire
This is the inferiorly arched margin of bone forming the inferior border of the orbit. The lateral aspect of the arch forms a sharp, prominent edge, while the medial portion of the arch becomes flat and merges with the lacrimal fossa. Its lateral aspect is part of the zygomatic bone and its medial aspect is part of the maxilla.
Orbital arises from the Latin orbis meaning a circle. Medieval anatomists were the first to apply this term to the eye socket. Infra means inferior to something. Margin denotes a border or edge.
