Greater sciatic foramen

Other Terms: Foramen sciaticum (ischiadicum) majus, Foramen ischiadicum majus, Grande ouverture ischiatique

The greater sciatic foramen results when the sacrospinous ligament closes off the open border of the greater sciatic notch to create a large passageway from the pelvis to the gluteal region. This foramen provides passage for the piriformis muscle, the superior and inferior gluteal vessels and nerves, the sciatic and posterior femoral cutaneous nerves, the internal pudendal vessels and pudendal nerve, and the nerves to the obturator internus and quadratus femoris muscles on their course from the pelvis to the inferior limb.
