Description

These are the small, mobile joints that occur between the distal ends of the metatarsal bones and the proximal end of the proximal phalanges (metatarsophalangeal joints) and between adjacent phalanges (interphalangeal joints).

Articular surfaces

Adjoining surfaces of the bones – metatarsal to phalangeal and phalangeal to phalangeal.

Ligaments

Numerous strong ligaments support and limit the movements of the bones in these joints.
