Description

This is a thick, cord-like band that attaches to the posterior aspect of the intercondylar area of the tibial plateau where its fibers blend with the fibers of the posterior horn of the lateral meniscus. It courses superoanteriorly towards femur becoming wider proximally and attaches to the lateral surface of the medial condyle of the femur. This ligament is typically shorter, thicker, and more vertical than the anterior cruciate ligament.

Function

Stabilizes knee joint and prevents posterior translation (sliding) of the tibia in relation to the femur. Limits lateral rotation of the tibia.
