Ligament ischiofémoral
Parts
Superior ischiofemoral ligament, lateral inferior ischiofemoral ligament, and medial inferior ischiofemoral ligament
Group
Lower limb joints - Hip
Description
This is a spiral ligamentous band centrally with flat straight bands above and below this central portion. It passes posterior to the hip joint where it blends with the fibrous capsule. The central fibers (superior ischiofemoral ligament) spiral superiorly around the neck of the femur from the posterior surface of the ischium to the medial surface of the greater trochanter of the femur. Arising from the inferior part of the ischium, the lateral and medial inferior ischiofemoral ligaments attach to the neck of the femur and reinforce the posterior aspect of the joint capsule.
Function
Stabilizes the hip joint and limits extension and medial rotation of the hip.
