Ulnar collateral ligament in the ...

Other Terms: Collateral carpal ulnar ligament, Ligamentum collaterale carpi ulnare (Articulatio radiocarpalis), Ulnar collateral ligament of wrist joint, Ligamentum collaterale carpi ulnare, Ligament collatéral ulnaire du carpe

Parts

Anterior, posterior, and inferior parts

Group

Upper limb joints - Elbow

Description

This is a strong, triangle-shaped ligament that spans the medial side of the elbow joint. The anterior and posterior sides of the triangle form thick bands with distinct fiber orientations, while the intermediate part of the ligament is thin and less distinct. The fibers of the anterior margin of the triangle connect from anterior aspect of the medial epicondyle to the medial aspect of the coronoid process. The fibers of the posterior margin of the triangle connect from the posterior aspect of the medial epicondyle to the medial margin of the olecranon. The intermediate fibers attach to the medial epicondyle and descend between the other fibers to attach to the side of the ulna or on a weak ligamentous band that extends between the olecranon and coronoid processes of the ulna.

Function

Stabilizes the medial side of the elbow joint. It prevents lateral flexion and medial translation of the elbow joint. Stabilizes the elbow during flexion.
