This is a vertically oriented ligamentous band with two parts. The superior band, the thicker of the two bands, arises from the fibers of the transverse ligament of the atlas and ascends to the base of the occipital bone, where it sits in a plane between the tectorial membrane and the apical ligament. The inferior part is thinner and less consistent. It extends from the fibers of the transverse atlantal ligament and attaches to the posterior surface of the axial body.
Stabilize the occipitoatlantoaxial complex.
