Lateral atlanto-axial joint

Other Terms: Articulatio atlantoaxialis lateralis, Articulation atlantoaxoïdienne latérale

Description

The lateral atlanto-axial joints are the two articulations between the inferior articular surface of the atlas and the superior articular surface of the axis. The paired lateral articulations are peculiar in that both of the articulating surfaces are slightly convex, so that during rest there is only a line of contact. The rotation effected by the combined joints is consequently not in one plane, but assumes a spiral character.
