Description

The anterior ligament of the malleus attaches between the neck of the malleus and the anterior wall of the tympanic cavity. It is a thin band of collagen fibers situated in a fold of the mucous membrane lining the tympanic cavity. Some of its collagen fibers pass into the petrotympanic fissure and attach to the spine of the sphenoid bone, while others continue into the sphenomandibular ligament. This ligament arises from the perichondrium of Meckel’s cartilage. In some instances, the ligament may contain isolated muscle fibers.
