Auricular surface of the ilium
Other Terms: Auricular facet of ilium, Facies auricularis, Facies auricularis ossis ilii
This surface was so named because its outline resembled that of the human ear. It is situated posterior to the iliac fossa on the sacropelvic surface of the ala. It is a smooth surface neighboring the rough iliac tuberosity. A cartilage covered synovial joint forms between this surface and the sacrum.
Auricular arises from the Latin auris for ear and the suffix -cula a diminutive ending denoting little, therefore the little ear.
