Malleolar fossa

Description

This is the shallow, rough hole about the size of the end of the index finger. The hole opens posteriorly and medially at the distal end of the fibula. It serves as the attachment site for the posterior tibiofibular and posterior talofibular ligaments.

Etymology

Malleolus is the Latin diminutive of malleus which means hammer. The Latin fossa literally translated means a ditch, trench, or hole.
