Description

The head is the rounded proximal end of the femur capped with articular cartilage. It is the site of articulation with the acetabulum of the os coxa. This rounded epiphyseal center consists of a thin surrounding plate of compact bone over an inner spongy center.

Etymology

The term head refers to a smooth, rounded articular surface. The Latin equivalent is caput.
