The body is the gently arching portion of the rib. This forms the largest portion of the bone comprising approximately two-thirds of its length. It is flattened in the vertical plane, presenting a greater height than width. Its narrow borders provide attachment to the intercostal muscles. Its flat surfaces provide attachment to various other muscles.
The term body or its Latin equivalent corpus refers to the large central portion of a structure.
