Superior articular process

Other Terms: Cranial articular process of vertebra, Processus articularis superior, Zygapophysis superior, Processus articularis superior vertebrae

Description

These processes project superiorly from the junction of the first segment's transverse process and pedicle. Like the similar processes in the lumbar vertebrae above them, their articular surfaces are directed dorsomedially. They form synovial articulations with the inferior articular processes of the fifth lumbar vertebra.

Etymology

Articular arises from the Latin verb articulare meaning to join or connect. The term process is Latin meaning to move forward. It denotes a projection of bone.
